CHIKOMBEDZI – In response to a surge in livestock thefts, the ZRP, in collaboration with the National Anti-Stock Theft Unit, launched an anti-stock theft awareness campaign in Chikombedzi on Thursday.
The event, held at Chief Mpapa’s residence aim to address the growing concern of livestock theft, which undermines the community’s primary source of income, food, and cultural significance.
Recently, police efforts led to the arrest of multiple thieves and the recovery of 120 stolen goats, demonstrating their commitment to bringing perpetrators to justice.
National Anti-Stock Theft Coordinator, Assistant Commissioner Fredrick Mbengwa, urged the community to establish village anti-stock theft committees headed by the village headman to create rules aligned with the Constitution.
“It would be wise to create a village anti-stock theft committee with the village head as the chairperson and bring up new rules to combat stock theft cases, but these rules should not contradict the constitution,” said Assistant Commissioner Mbengwa.
“Everyone has the power to arrest using citizen arrest powers, but I urge you not to beat them; rather, bring them to the police station.”
Mbengwa also offered practical advice to combat theft, including securing yokes, vetting employees from distant areas, and ensuring proper livestock branding.
Chief Mpapa praised the ZRP’s efforts, highlighting the positive police-village relationship, and encouraged continued cooperation for the community’s benefit.
“This is a good initiative, and I urge the police and the village to keep working hand in hand to bring the culprits to justice and eliminate stock thefts,” said Chief Mpapa.
