A 33-year-old pedestrian, Tafara Chasakara, was hit by a Honda Fit vehicle on February 24, around 1915 hours, at the 290km peg along the Mutare-Masvingo road.
According to Masvingo province police spokesperson, Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa, the Honda Fit was being driven by Ernest Mudavanhu (56) from Pangolin, Masvingo. Chasakara, from Nongerai village in Chivi, sustained serious head injuries and died on the spot.
Inspector Dhewa said Mudavanhu was driving his Honda Fit due west with two passengers on board when he hit Chasakara, who was crossing the road from the northern direction.
“The driver failed to stop in time, resulting in the pedestrian being struck and succumbing to head injuries,” Inspector Dhewa said.
The police took the body to Masvingo Provincial Hospital for postmortem.
Inspector Dhewa urged drivers to exercise extra caution when on the road, especially when approaching pedestrian crossing points.
“We also advise pedestrians to be vigilant and look out for approaching traffic when crossing the road,” said Dhewa.
