The Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Primary and Secondary Education is conducting a nationwide series of public hearings on the Zimbabwe Schools Examinations Council (ZIMSEC) Amendment Bill (H.B.8, 2025).
The hearings which started on Monday will run until 29th of August 2025, are aimed at gathering public input on proposed changes to the Zimbabwe Schools Examination Council Act.
According to a schedule released by Parliament in possession of The Midweek Watch, the hearings are being carried out by two teams covering various provinces across the country.
Team A began the hearings on Monday, 25 August at the New Ambassador Hotel in Harare and the team proceeded to Gweru Theatre. On Wednesday, 27 August will see the team in Masvingo at Mucheke Hall and on Thursday 28th August, they will head to Mutare for the hearing at Sakubva Hall, before wrapping up the week on Friday 29th at Nyanda Nehanda Hall in Marondera.
Team B started their hearings on Monday, 25 August at Lupane Council Hall. On Tuesday, they proceeded to Chitauze Constituency Hall. Wednesday’s hearing will take place at Selbourne Hotel in Bulawayo, followed by Thursday’s session at Cooksey Hall in Gwanda. The final hearing for Team B will be held on Friday at Tendayi Hall in Beitbridge.
The Bill seeks to update Zimbabwe Schools Examinations Council Act of 1994 which has been said to be outdated and is no longer aligned with the contemporary demands of assessment credibility, accountability and examination security, following several exam leakages and persistent challenges.
Citizens are encouraged to attend and contribute their views on how the ZIMSEC system can be improved, as part of the democratic process to enhance the quality and transparency of national examinations.
