CHIREDZI- Former Chiredzi Town Council Chairman Francis Moyo honoured 38 outstanding cane cutters for 2024 at his 80 hectare Frango Farm Subdivision 5, Buffalo Range in Chiredzi.
Wonder Moyo topped the list harvesting 68 bundles and taking home a scotch cart, bicycle, wheelbarrow, machete, cane cutting uniform and hoe. Samson Gundani secured second place with 66.5 bundles receiving the same package minus the wheelbarrow. Edmore Kurima claimed third spot with 64.5 bundles, earning a wheelbarrow, bicycle, machete and hoe.
Chiredzi Productive Cane Association Chairman Collin Changamire praised Moyo’s exemplary gesture by valuing contribution of workers and urged the workers to use the tools to develop their homesteads.
“These tools should not be sold, but used to develop your homesteads and improve your livelihoods,” said Changamire.
Zimbabwe Sugar Association Experiment Station senior research plant pathologist, Petros Zvoutete, underscored the crucial role cane cutters play in determining the sugarcane industry’s productivity.
“Cane cutters are the most respected in the sugarcane production, without cane cutters there is no sugar industry to talk about since their cutting techniques determines the following year’s yield,” said Zvoutete.
General supervisor Steven Maredza received a motorbike, while two drivers were awarded safety boots and reflectors.
This event celebrated the dedication and perseverance of Moyo’s cane cutters, fostering teamwork and motivation within the farming community.
