MASVINGO-Mucheke A, residents in Masvingo City were left shell shocked when a newly baby girl was found dumped in a maize field behind Dikwindi Primary School today at 9am.
A lady with who operates a vending stall at Mucheke Rank confirmed the sad news and sent pictures of the newly born baby to The Midweek Watch this afternoon.
Masvingo Province Police spokesperson, Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa said he had not received the report by the time of posting the story.
“I was seated with my friends at a house in Mucheke near Dikwindi when an old woman raised alarm saying there is a newly born baby in the mud in a maize field nearby crying.
“We all rushed to the scene and found the baby crying with the umbilical cord still intact and we used a razor blade to cut it off the baby. We used the old woman’s jacket to wrap the baby and one of the women who is pregnant offered some of her clothes for her unborn baby to dress the dumped baby.
“I then went to the Police at Chikato to make a report and they came to get statements from witnesses and we took the baby to Social Welfare Department in town who offered the baby some milk.
“We then took the baby to Masvingo Provincial Hospital where she is currently receiving treatment in the children’s ward, but she is in good spirit,” said the woman.
The baby was put on scale and weighed 2.2kg.
