KWEKWE- Globe and Phoenix Primary School headmaster, Clarence Mwale, has applauded the Nedbank Tour de Great Dyke for facilitating a timely donation of books to the newly commissioned Kwekwe school.
The books, donated by Books for Africa through Men for Equality as part of the 2025 Nedbank Tour de Great Dyke, were handed over during the recently concluded cycling event, which promotes wellness, community development, and education along Zimbabwe’s mineral belt.
Mwale described the donation as “a key contribution” to the school’s revival, noting that the books would greatly enhance learning at the new US$600, 000 facility commissioned last month by Minister of Primary and Secondary Education, Torerai Moyo.
“This support could not have come at a better time,” he said. “After the tragedy that befell our school when a classroom floor collapsed into a mine shaft, our learners have endured so much. These books will help restore the joy of learning.”
Globe and Phoenix Primary, which once operated from makeshift tents after the collapse caused by illegal mining activities, has now been rebuilt through the support of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The new complex includes seven learning blocks, an administration block, and modern facilities powered by a 10kVA solar system.
He expressed gratitude to the government, development partners, and the private sector — including participants of the Tour de Great Dyke — for their role in restoring the school’s dignity and hope.
“The partnership between government, the church, and corporates such as those behind the Great Dyke Tour shows what collective effort can achieve,” he said. “It is a story of resilience and renewal for our community.”
The donation, made during the Tour’s Kwekwe leg, adds an educational dimension to the annual cycling event, which has grown beyond sport to become a platform for social impact and corporate responsibility across Zimbabwe’s mining communities.
Globe and Phoenix Primary School was recently commissioned two years after its collapse due to illegal mining operations leaving hundreds of learners displaced.
