Masvingo – Masvingo Wellness Academy (MWA) Volleyball has launched an appeal for sponsorship from local businesses and individuals as it seeks to expand its youth development programmes and compete at higher levels.

Founded in April 2025 by Munyaradzi Michael Khumbula and Isaac Chiurawa, the academy is built on the vision of promoting wellness through sport with a strong focus on volleyball.
The initiative aims to instill discipline, good behaviour and positive values among young people while encouraging leadership, teamwork and both physical and mental well-being.
Despite being in existence for just over a year, MWA Volleyball has already made strides by participating in local social tournaments and organizing friendly matches with institutions such as Bondolfi, Masvingo Teachers College, Great Zimbabwe University and Reformed Church University as well as local teams including Gutu Bombers and Zaka.

Head coach Munyaradzi Michael Khumbula popularly known as Coach Mundy said the academy has managed to deliver quality training, groom talent and positively influence the behaviour of its members.
“We have seen significant transformation in our players, not only in sport but also in their character and discipline. The community and parents have been very supportive, and that motivates us to do more,” he said.

However, the academy continues to face financial challenges that have hindered its ambitions to join the top-flight volleyball league and establish sustainable youth-driven projects.
“We have the vision and the talent but limited resources and lack of a dedicated training facility are holding us back,” Khumbula added.

The academy is seeking both financial and material support to enhance its operations. Key needs include training equipment such as agility ladders, cones, hurdles, medical kits and volleyballs as well as sporting kits like uniforms and nets.
Additional funding is required for affiliation fees, participation in tournaments, coaching development programmes and match-day logistics.
MWA Volleyball also emphasised that sponsorship partnerships would offer value to businesses through brand visibility and community engagement. Sponsors’ brands would be promoted through jerseys, equipment, social media platforms, local newspapers and radio coverage.
“We believe in creating mutually beneficial partnerships. Sponsors will gain exposure while contributing to a meaningful cause that shapes the future of our youth,” said MWA chairperson Taurai Chingwara.
The academy operates under the theme “Zero tolerance to bad choices, substance and drug abuse,” reflecting its commitment to promoting a healthy lifestyle and positive decision-making among young people.
With a strong coaching philosophy centred on teamwork, respect, responsibility and sportsmanship, MWA aims to create an inclusive environment where players of all ages and skill levels can thrive.

As the academy continues to grow, its leadership remains hopeful that support from the community and corporate sector will help turn its vision into reality.
“We are not just building athletes, we are building responsible citizens. Every stage in life matters and every life matters most,” Khumbula said.
