MUTARE-The City of Mutare on Saturday hosted a Charity Golf Tournament at Hillside Sports Club, in a fundraising drive aimed at supporting Zororai Old People’s Home and education for underprivileged.

The one day tournament attracted players from the city, with the teams teeing off early in the morning in a spirited competition that combined sporting excellence with philanthropy.

The local authority said proceeds from the event will go towards improving the welfare of elderly residents at Zororai Old People’s Home while also assisting disadvantaged children with school fees, learning materials and other educational needs.

Speaking during the prize giving ceremony, City of Mutare Golf Club Organizing Secretary Zebediah Muneta said the tournament formed part of council’s corporate social investment programme and reflected its commitment to uplifting vulnerable members of the community through partnerships with the private sector.

“The objective is not only to enjoy a round of golf but also to make a meaningful difference in the lives of the elderly and children who require our support.  We are encouraged by the overwhelming response from our corporate partners and golfers who answered the call,” Muneta said.

Throughout the day, players battled for honors across various categories, navigating the fairways and greens while aiming for birdies and pars, with accurate approach shots and steady putting proving decisive. A few competitors thrilled spectators with impressive drives off the tee, while others recovered brilliantly from the bunkers to keep their scocre cards competitive.

FBC Bank, Motornet, Inter Africa, Tinty’s Hardware, Diamond FM, Moonlight, Dairibord among others sponsored holes and fielded teams, underscoring growing support for initiatives that combine sport with community development.

Participants said the event demonstrated that golf could serve as a powerful platform for giving back to society, with every swing contributing towards a worthy cause.

Muneta expressed optimism that the charity tournament would become an annual fixture on Mutare’s golfing calendar, attracting even more sponsors and players to help expand assistance to vulnerable groups within the community.

Winners in the various divisions were recognized after an exciting day on the course, with organizers commending all participants for displaying sportsmanship while helping drive a cause that extends well beyond the 18th hole.
