Mupfumi prophet of doom sentenced

Mutare – A Mutare man who caused panic after spreading a false prophecy predicting the death of prominent businessman Isau Fungai Mupfumi has been sentenced to 420 hours of community service by the Mutare Civil Court.

Pride Madziwana was convicted of criminal nuisance after his reckless statements sparked unnecessary fear and distress within the community. Presiding magistrate Poterai Gwezhira ruled that words capable of disturbing public peace carry serious consequences under the law.

Instead of serving a custodial sentence, Madziwana was ordered to perform unpaid community service at the Mutare Civil Court. The ruling has since generated debate over the line between spiritual expression and irresponsible public statements.

The case also highlights the dangers of spreading false information in society. Whether presented as prophecy, gossip, or fake news, unverified claims can have damaging effects on individuals, families and communities.

False statements predicting death or disaster often create fear, emotional trauma and reputational harm for those targeted. In many cases, authorities are forced to intervene, using valuable public resources to restore order and calm tensions created by misinformation.

The court’s decision serves as a reminder that while freedom of expression is protected, it does not extend to statements that incite panic or disrupt public peace. Words carry power and reckless speech can ultimately lead to legal accountability.
