CHIKOMBEDZI-Josiah Dumela (35) from Musengi Village under Chief Masivamele has been arrested for allegedly brutally killing his two children, and removing some intestines of one of his victims.
The incident which has left the local community in a state of shock happened on June 19 around 3am.
The deceased have been identified as Prosperity Dumela (3) and Experience Dumela (1 year and 6 months).
During the incident, his wife, Laiza Natala (39), who is disabled, sustained a serious head injury after allegedly being struck with an unknown object by Josiah.
Despite her injuries, Natala managed crawl to a neighbour’s house and sought assistance from Lucia Mukungulushi (51).
The neighbour accompanied Natala back to the homestead where they allegedly found the accused holding a mopani log. Community members restrained him before entering the house.
Inside, they found the two children dead with severe injuries.
Police attended the scene and arrested the suspect who remains in custody in Chikombedzi.
The bodies were taken to Chiredzi District Hospital for post-mortem examinations while Natala is also receiving treatment.
Confirming the incident, ZRP Provincial Spokesperson Inspector Kudakwashe Dehwa urged communities caring for people living with mental health conditions to support them in adhering to prescribed treatment and medication.
