MASVINGO City- The recently sworn in Masvingo City councillors have vowed to take heard on the scourge of substance abuse by building a rehabilitation centre in the ancient city.

The rehabilitation centre for drugs and substance abusers will be built together with a new infectious disease centre, Cllr Alec Tabe of ward 4 told The Midweek Watch.

Tabe said a resolution for the construction of a rehabilitation and an infectious disease centre was made and, “we are going to implement that resolution as a matter of urgency because drug abuse is now rampant and threatening to wipe out a whole generation”.

The centres will be situated near the new Runyararo Clinic and the funds to build the facilities will be sourced from development partners.

“We are also sourcing funds from development partners as we want to build an ideal centre to rehabilitate the youths who are abusing drugs and an infectious disease centre like the one in Harare so that as an urban set up we are able to curb and control infectious diseases in time of outbreaks,” said Tabe.

Masvingo City has been hit by substance and drug abuse like most urban centres in the country since the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 which was characterized by lockdowns.

The only rehabilitation centre in Masvingo Province, Ngomahuru Hospital is reportedly full with inmates who include medical doctors.
