Masvingo readies for boxing revival

MASVINGO-In a historic move that is set to revitalize the boxing landscape in Masvingo, the provincial committee has set the ball rolling by engaging the national controlling board to register as a member during their inaugural meeting recently.

Masvingo Provincial Combat Sports Development Committee was officially inducted on May 28, marking a significant milestone in the province’s boxing development journey. 

The induction was presided over by Priscilla Kadungure, Acting CEO of the Zimbabwe National Boxing and Wrestling Control Board (ZNBWCB), and supported by programs manager, Moreways Changa.

The induction ceremony set the stage for a brighter future for boxing in Masvingo Province.

The committee’s partnership with the Zimbabwe Boxing Federation (ZBF), spearheaded by national technical director, Steven Masiyambumbi, with the aim  to revive and develop grassroots boxing, identifying, nurturing, and developing young talent to create a robust pool of boxers who can transition to professionals.

To enhance their understanding of boxing technical officiating, the committee members were encouraged to undergo training at a cost of $50 each, moreover this investment will enable them to effectively monitor and evaluate boxing events, contributing to improved performance and safety in the province.

The partnership also facilitates affiliation with the ZBF, allowing the committee to host amateur tournaments and access resources, expertise, and support for coach, judge, and referee training. 

With plans to establish boxing clubs in all the province’s seven districts, the committee is poised to make a significant impact on the sport’s development in Masvingo.

The Masvingo Provincial Combat Sports Development Committee immediately announced a technical officials training program which will be held from September 23-28, followed by a National Amateur Boxing Tournament on September 28. 

This tournament will bring together top boxers from the province, who will be showcasing their skills and talent.

The training and tournament are key steps in developing boxing in Masvingo Province, and promise to be a thrilling showcase of the sport.
