Mass campaign against Lymphatic Filariasis in Gutu, Chiredzi

Prevention is key, the Ministry of Health and Child Care is launching a Mass Drug Administration Campaign against Lymphatic filariasis from September 16th to 28th, 2024, targeting Gutu and Chiredzi districts.

The program aims to prevent and control Lymphatic Filariasis, protecting both males and females aged 2 years and above.

The program was confirmed by Gutu District Health Promotion Officer Tonderai Chibura stating that:

“Lymphatic Filariasis, is a debilitating disease caused by parasitic worms, affects over 120 million people in 80 countries, with 20% of the world’s population at risk of infection.

“It’s the second leading cause of permanent and long-term disability in developing countries, leaving victims with swollen limbs, genital organs, and breasts, as well as damaged kidneys and lymphatic systems.”

The disease spreads silently, with no signs or symptoms in its early stages, but as it progresses, it unleashes a torrent of acute manifestations, including fever, local swellings, and lymphatic blockages.

According to Chibura, if the disease is left untreated, it leads to elephantiasis, a condition that disfigures the body and may lead to disability.

Integrated vector management (IVM) is crucial in combating the disease, this includes spraying houses against mosquitoes, using treated mosquito nets, and avoiding mosquito bites through repellents, long-sleeved clothes, and staying indoors at dusk.
