GOKWE-A 26-year-old Gokwe woman was allegedly stabbed to death by her ex-husband following a dispute over a US$100 “refund” linked to their failed relationship.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed the death of Nancy Sumburani, who died on the spot after being attacked at Huni Compound near Zenda Business Centre under Chief Chireya on Monday night.

Police said the suspect, Learnard Tomu (30), of Village 24A under Headman Fakazi, has since been arrested and is expected to appear in court facing a murder charge.

According to police investigations, Tomu had earlier visited the now deceased’s homestead in a bid to reconcile, but the attempt collapsed after Sumburani reportedly refused, citing his violent behaviour.

A family mediation involving Sumburani, her sister Alerta Makore and an uncle, identified only as Jonathan, failed to resolve the dispute.

Police said the suspect left the homestead in anger before returning about 30 minutes later, where he allegedly demanded the return of a cellphone and US$100 he claimed to have given Sumburani during the subsistence of their relationship.

“An altercation ensued after the suspect demanded the return of a cellphone and US$100. He allegedly produced a knife and stabbed the victim several times,” police said.

Sumburani died at the scene.

Her body was taken to Gokwe North District Hospital mortuary for a post-mortem, while the suspect remains in police custody.

Police have urged members of the public to resolve domestic disputes amicably to avoid unnecessary loss of life.
