MASVINGO-They may have bowed out of the ZIFA Munhumutapa Challenge Cup but Lowveld Football Development Academy (LDFA) left Mucheke Stadium with something far more valuable than a place in the next round, respect.

The Triangle-based academy produced a spirited performance against ZIFA Division One side Blackrock FC before eventually losing 4-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in regulation time in the preliminary round of the competition.

For a team competing in the ZIFA Masvingo Province D2 League, LFDA matched their more experienced opponents stride for stride, showcasing discipline, courage and a level of football that belied their status.

The academy’s 17-year-old goalkeeper, Obience Rujada was the standout performer, producing a string of outstanding saves to frustrate Blackrock FC and keep his side in the contest.

His heroics inspired belief among his teammates as they refused to be intimidated by higher league opposition.

Blackrock FC broke the deadlock before halftime but LFDA responded after the break through Walter Siwela scoring his 6th goal in this cup, rose highest to head home the equaliser and force the match into a dramatic penalty shootout.

Although Blackrock FC eventually triumphed 4-2 on penalties, the result did little to overshadow LFDA’s impressive display.

Founded by Archford Guvuriro in August 2024 and officially registered with ZIFA in January 2025, LFDA has rapidly grown into one of the Lowveld’s promising football development centres.

Based in Triangle, the academy has already registered more than 300 players on FIFA Connect across age groups ranging from u10 to u20 for both boys and girls.

Beyond developing footballers, the academy has embraced a broader mission of steering young people away from drugs and crime through sport.

LFDA president and founder Archford Guvuriro said the performance against Blackrock FC proved that investment in youth development can compete with experience.

“We may have lost on penalties but I believe we won many hearts. Our boys showed courage, discipline and confidence against a D1 side. They demonstrated that age and league status do not determine the quality of football.”

Guvuriro said the academy was established to create opportunities for young people in the Lowveld.

“Our vision has always been bigger than winning matches. We want to nurture talent, give young players a pathway to professional football and keep them away from drugs and other social ills that threaten their future.”

He said the academy’s rapid progress in less than two years was encouraging.

“We started in August 2024, registered with ZIFA in January 2025and joined D2 this season. Today we have over 300 registered players across different age groups. Representing our province in the Munhumutapa Challenge Cup and competing the way we did against Blackrock shows we are moving in the right direction.”

Despite sitting 10th in the log standings, LFDA still has three games in hand, leaving Guvuriro optimistic about the remainder of the season.

“This is only the beginning. We will continue developing our players, improving our structures and giving these youngsters a platform to dream. If we maintain this commitment, the future of football in the Lowveld is very bright.”

The academy’s impressive performance at Mucheke Stadium on Saturday has already begun to pay dividends with several players attracting interest from clubs in the Pacific Storm Eastern Region Soccer League as they strengthen their squads during the mid-season transfer window.

“The performance at Mucheke Stadium gave our boys the perfect platform to showcase their talent. We are delighted that several of our players have already attracted interest from clubs in the PSERSL as teams prepare for the second half of the season,” said Guvuriro.

The Academy already produced players playing for certain clubs such as FC Platinum,FC Wangu Mazodze , Destiny, Mutare City Rovers , Great Zimbabwe University, Power FC, Chapungu FC , Renco Mine and Jordan FC.

“That is exactly why we established this academy. Our mission is not only to win matches but to develop players and create pathways for them to play at higher levels. If our players move on to bigger clubs, we will celebrate because that means we are fulfilling our purpose.”

“We are building a football academy that will become a home of talent in the Lowveld. This is just the beginning and we believe many more of our players will soon be making names for themselves across Zimbabwe.”

For many who watched at Mucheke Stadium, LFDA’s penalty shootout defeat did not define the afternoon. Instead, it announced the arrival of a fearless young academy whose ambition extends far beyond results.

With a growing reputation for developing talent and opening doors to bigger opportunities, Lowveld Football Development Academy is proving that the future of football in the Lowveld is already taking shape.
