MASVINGO – Little-known Makasi Primary School in Mapanzure, Masvingo Rural shocked all and sundry with a scintillating performance at this year’s annual Masvingo District Music Competition.
Previously, the competition was dominated by Masvingo Urban schools, but this time, little-known Makasi pulled a shocker with their song “Zera” and earned themselves a place at the provincial competitions where they unfortunately surrendered the chance to represent Masvingo at the national level.
Makasi Primary School choir director, Tawanda Mudzimba was happy with the performance of his choir which was participating at the event for the first time.
“I am happy with the performance of my choir which was participating for the first time. District competitions were not that tough; however, it was at the provincial competitions where we then fell by the way side and lost a chance to represent Masvingo at the national level,” he said.
Perennial winners Gutu United Primary School won the provincial competition and will represent Masvingo at the national level.
Gutu United Primary School were also the provincial winners last year but, they lost at the national level.
The results of the provincial music competitions which were held on October 20 2023, were as follows; Gutu Primary School, as usual, claimed the first position followed by Zhara Primary School from Chivi. Gumunyu Primary School from Bikita came third with Rutenga Primary School of Mwenezi coming fourth. Bota of Zaka, Makasi and Chiredzi District came fifth, sixth and seventh respectively.
The national music compositions have been pencilled from the 25th to the 28th of October.
