MASVINGO-Member of Parliament for Mwenezi North Constituency, Master Makope was yesterday escorted by State Security from Masvingo to Harare to attend an extraordinary sitting of Parliament convened by President Mnangagwa.
The extraordinary sitting was called to consider the Constitution of Zimbabwe Amendment No. 3 Bill (H.B. 1B, 2026), which had already been passed by the Senate with some amendments.
Speaking to The Midweek Watch, Makope said arrangements were made to ensure he arrives in time for the sitting after he was involved in a road traffic accident on Monday along the Masvingo–Beitbridge Highway.
Makope said he has since been discharged from hospital and is recovering well at home.
“A Fortuner travelling from Masvingo towards Beitbridge was speeding and struck two cows at the same time. It was coming from the opposite direction. After hitting the cows, the vehicle swerved and I had to avoid it by moving towards the yellow lane.”
“Unfortunately, as I was passing that vehicle, one of the cows was thrown into the air and landed in front of my car. I hit the cow and my vehicle veered off the road. I tried to regain control for about 100 metres but failed, and the car went off the road and hits a tree.”
“My white Toyota GD6 was damaged and I sustained minor injuries. The accident happened near the turn-off to Neshuro Growth Point at around 1830 hours,” said Makope.
Makope said despite the accident, he remained committed to carrying out his parliamentary duties and appreciated the support he received during the incident and recovery period.
In one of the Zanu PF WhatsApp groups it was posted that the Minister of State Security Lovemore Matuke sent the escort vehicles to Makope to accompany him to Harare to ensure that he votes for the controversial CAB3 which now awaits the President’s signature to become law.
The new amendments would see President Mnangagwa’s term of office being extended by two more years until 2030.
