Gweru – A 10-month-old infant was killed in a tragic road accident, while 11 others sustained varying injuries after two vehicles were involved in a head-on collision at Gweru Ok Mart along Mvuma Road.
The incident occurred last Saturday.
According to the Midlands province police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko, Elton Shoko of Greenvale in Gweru was driving a Nissan Caravan towards Gweru, carrying 11 passengers.
An unknown motorist driving a white Jeep, AFD 0245 was heading in the opposite direction.
Upon reaching the 84 km peg, the Jeep driver attempted to overtake another vehicle, encroaching into the opposite lane and resulting in a head-on collision with Shoko’s vehicle.
“The infant died on the spot, and 11 others were injured. The Jeep driver fled the scene and has not been located,” Insp Mahoko stated.
He added that the injured were taken to Gweru Provincial Hospital, where some were treated and discharged, while others were admitted for further care.
The police are appealing to the public for any information that could lead to the identification of the Jeep’s owner.
