MILLICENT HUNGWE

Masvingo-In a movie style act that left a trail of destruction and a grave, a Masvingo man went berserk and axed his wife to death in full view of the children, burnt the corpse and set several houses of his relatives on fire.

Morgen Gwazira.

He is on the run.

The incident was confirmed by ZRP Masvingo Province deputy spokesperson Assistant Inspector Masauso Patinyu.

The suspect, Morgen Gwazira (33) of Machingambi Village under Chief Mugabe in Masvingo Rural, is on the run after he killed his wife, Liliosa Gwenhamo (34), in front of their four children on October 12 at around 10:00 AM.

Gwazira and his family were in a kitchen hut when he locked the door from inside.

Without warning, he took an axe and struck his wife once on the head, killing her instantly.

He allegedly splashed petrol around the hut intending to burn the entire family alive.

Fortunately, the children managed to escape before he could set the huts alight, when he opened the door wanting to burn the house down from the outside

Gwazira then reportedly dragged his wife’s lifeless body outside, placed firewood on it, poured petrol and set her remains on fire.

Not stopping there, he torched the entire kitchen hut.

His rampage continued across the village — first to his uncle, Johnson Gwazira’s homestead, where he found no one at home but went on to set three thatched huts on fire.

He proceeded to his father’s home, Benjamin Gwazira (66), and set two more houses and a thatched hut on fire, reducing them to ashes.

Before fleeing into the bush, he also set fire to a pig sty, killing three of them.

The motive behind the destruction of property and murder is not known.

Police has since launched a manhunt for Gwazira, urging members of the public to report any information that could lead to his arrest.
