MBERENGWA – Hibbo 14 FC were crowned Yorks Soccer Tournament champions after narrowly edging J West B FC via a penalty shootout at Mberengwa Business Centre recently.
For their hard work and outstanding performance, Hibbo 14 walked away with US$100 prize money.
The soccer tournament, organised by representatives from different mining syndicates around Yorks in Mberengwa, had seven teams affiliated namely, Magumbuta, Yorks A and B, J West A and B, Hibbo 14 and Machaya.
The reigning champions were pooled in Group B together with Magumbuta, J West A and Yorks B where they finished second behind Magumbuta. Hibbo 14 registered one defeat and one win to advance to the semifinals where they went on to beat Yorks A to reach the final and subsequently beat J West B in the final.
Speaking after the final whistle, Hibbo 14 head coach Ashel Gutu applauded his charges for a spirited performance before adding that it was just the beginning of new things to come as they were preparing for life in the world of unfashionable world of Division 2 next season.
“The tournament has given us a chance to measure our success. We are doing everything within our means to prepare a formidable side that will compete in Division 2 next year. So, this tournament has given us an opportunity to assess the team and winning the tournament was an icing on the cake,” he said.
