ZVISHAVANE-Residents have raised a red flag over the use of asbestos (chinda) in the construction of CG Road and Nil area by a Chinese owned company in the mining town of Zvishavane.

The dust generated by vehicles using the road has sparked fears over the long-term health implications of asbestos exposure.
According to the Zvishavane District Acting Medical Superintendent Dr Takawira Chichevo, inhaling asbestos dust can lead to asbestosis, a chronic lung condition, as well as mesothelioma, a type of lung cancer.
He added that other cancers, such as ovarian and colon cancer, may also arise from prolonged exposure to asbestos dust, warning that the effects of asbestos exposure may take 10-50 years to manifest, making it challenging to link the dust to potential health problems.
In response to the concerns, Environmental Management Agency (EMA) Spokesperson Amkela Sidange assured that the company responsible for the road construction has been engaged to implement dust suppression measures and overlay the road with gravel to prevent air contamination.
However, not everyone shares the same level of concern, an anonymous source suggested that criticizing the construction project might hinder development, implying that economic growth should take precedence over health concerns.
Residents, however, remain adamant that their health and well-being should be the top priority. “Development is important, but not at the cost of our health,” said one resident Chipo Moyo.
