Gweru woman raped, robbed at old Council beerhall
-as Mberengwa mentally ill conceives

GWERU -Police have confirmed a report of robbery and rape which occurred in Ascot Suburb, Gweru on Monday 20 November 2023 at around 7pm.
The Police told The Midweek Watch that an unknown man waylaid a woman (23), of Claremont Park who was walking alone to Ascot Extension Shopping Centre.
Upon reaching a point near an old City Council Bar, the man suddenly emerged and grabbed her neck. He dragged her into the City Council Bar where he violently demanded cash from her.
He robbed her of an Itel cell phone and ZWL$600 and forced her to lie down and raped her. During the process, complainant shouted for help and the man ran away. The complainant sought refuge at the popular 04 Night Club where she was later assisted by a ZRP Mtapa Police Constabulary member who is investigating the matter and no arrests have been made so far.
In an unrelated matter on an unknown date, but during the month of June 2023, a 30 year old woman believed to be suffering from a mental illness was raped in Village Simbi under Chief Nyamhondo in Mberengwa.
The sexual attack happened when she was walking alone to a river.
A man, Tongai Shumba of Chirovandovo Business Centre is being investigated in connection with the case.
It is suspected that the man took advantage of the victim’s condition and lured her into a bush where he raped her. She did not tell anyone and the matter came to light when complainant’s sister discovered that she was pregnant and interviewed her.
A report was made at ZRP Mataga and the suspect is at large.
Midlands Provincial Police Spokesperson Inspector, Emmanuel Mahoko is appealing for information regarding the suspect’s whereabouts
“We appeal for any information that may assist in the arrest of these rape suspects. We appeal to members of the public not to use dark areas when walking at night.” he added.
