GWERU-Member of Parliament for Gweru Urban Constituency, Josiah Makombe on Thursday treated the less privileged senior citizens in the city of progress with assorted goodies.
The assorted food hampers included sugar, cooking oil, soap, salt, rice among other basic commodities.
Most of the beneficiaries were the elderly and people with disabilities drawn from the constituency’s six wards who gathered at the Civic Center to receive the goodies.
Makombe said Christmas embodies the spirit of generosity, compassion, and kindness.
“It’s important to extend a helping hand to those in need and today’s donation was meant to cheer our senior citizens in our community during this Christmas holiday.
“These are unsung heroes of our life time and it is our duty to spend time with them as well as putting a smile on their faces. I cherish this tradition from my childhood to share joy with the elderly,” he said.
He added that in giving, people can discover the greatest joy of their lives.
Granny Tennyson Mugobogobo from Delysford in ward 3, commended the Gweru legislature for remembering the elderly and people with disabilities in the Midlands capital.
“I want to thank the honourable MP for giving us food hampers and spending time with us. This is really great time to share ideas as well as taping some wisdom. This is what is expected from great leaders,” added Mugobogobo.
Another elderly woman, Rhoda Phiri from Mtapa said she was very happy to receive grocery hampers from the Gweru legislator as her children didn’t visit her this Christmas holiday.
“I am grateful for this gesture. I was expecting to be with all my children this holiday but they failed to come, so I am happy that the MP has remembered me and gave me something to smile this Christmas,” she said.
The hand over ceremony was graced by Gweru Mayor, councilor Martin Chivhoko and other councilors.
