The government, through the Environmental Management Agency (EMA), has partnered with Christian Care to conserve wetlands in Masvingo Province.

The partnership aims to promote sustainable livelihoods and climate resilience in the province.
Speaking during the World Wetland Day media tour held in Bikita last Friday, EMA Masvingo Provincial Manager, Milton Muusha, emphasized the importance of conserving wetlands.
“Wetlands are crucial ecosystems that provide numerous benefits, including water filtration, flood control, and habitat for diverse species. It is essential that we protect these areas for future generations,” Muusha said.
Taruberekera Regismistong, project officer at Christian Care, highlighted the organization’s role in supporting community-led conservation initiatives.
“We are working closely with local communities to promote sustainable land use practices and protect wetlands. Our partnership with EMA is crucial in achieving this goal,” said Taruberekera
Svodai Svaruka, Secretary of Mukweture Garden under Chief Mazungunye, expressed her gratitude.
“The conservation of our wetland has improved our livelihoods, we are now able to irrigate our crops and have a steady supply of fish from the dam,” Svaruka said.
Simbarashe Taruvinga, Councillor for Ward 5, noted that the project has made significant progress.
“We have fenced 6 hectares of the 10-hectare Chapedo wetland, with the remaining work underway. Our dam is 6 meters deep and provides a reliable source of fish for the community, which helps balance their diet,” Taruvinga said.
The partnership between the government, Christian Care, and local communities demonstrates a commitment to protecting Zimbabwe’s natural resources and promoting sustainable development.
