MWENEZI-The growing culture of former students giving back to their schools, long associated with elite learning institutions is now steadily spreading to developing rural areas, with Guiding Star High emerging as a shining example.
In a gesture aimed at supporting sports development and uplifting their former school, the Guiding Star Old Students Association yesterday donated soccer kits for both the boys’ and girls’ teams. The donation was handed over by the association’s leadership comprising chairperson Rafios Chikwerengwe, treasurer Shingairai Jerera and committee member Prince Tafadzwa Masvosve.
Speaking during the handover ceremony, Chikwerengwe described the donation as the beginning of a broader vision to support the institution that played a pivotal role in shaping their futures.
“This is only the starting point. We intend to do even more for the school that nurtured us into the people we are today,” he said.
Situated in the heart of Chief Negari in Ward 3, Guiding Star High School has over the years produced numerous professionals and entrepreneurs who are making significant contributions both locally and abroad.
Chikwerengwe is a successful businessman and proprietor of Highway Chalets Lodges, while Prince Tafadzwa Masvosve is a qualified human resources executive and irrigation technology engineer. Shingairai Jerera serves as an agricultural extension officer.
The trio represents only a fraction of the many successful individuals who passed through the corridors of the school, highlighting the untapped potential and rich human capital nurtured by the rural learning institution.
Across the country, old students’ associations are increasingly becoming critical partners in educational development, with some well-organised alumni bodies assisting schools to acquire buses, construct classroom blocks and improve learning facilities.
At Guiding Star High School, the latest donation has brought renewed excitement and motivation to the learners, particularly the soccer teams, who are preparing for the prestigious Munhumutapa Trophy competitions
