Gokwe bans dangerous weapons as crimes surge

Gokwe-In response to the increase in crimes, Chief Superintendent Tsitsi Chikono, the Officer Commanding Police, Gokwe District, has issued a three-month ban on carrying certain weapons in public.
The prohibition, effective from July 22, 2024, to October 22, 2024, aims to enhance public safety and maintain peace in the district.
The directive falls under Section 4(1) of the Maintenance of Peace and Order Act (Chapter 11:23) and applies to the entire Gokwe District, which is bordered by Munyati River to the north-east, Ngondoma River to the south-east, and neighbouring districts such as Nkayi, Lupane, and Hwange.
The specific areas within these boundaries include Mutukanye, Gwenya, Gababe, Mateme, Nyaje, Tachi, Ndarira, Kana, Gadza, Mukoka, Chehama, Msala, Mbungu, Kangura, Maboke, Marirangwe, Sengwa Research Area, Chirisa Game Park, Vumba, Simuchembo, Zhomba, Nenyunga, and Guyu.
The banned weapons encompass a variety of traditional and improvised weapons, including but not limited to: catapults, machetes, axes, knobkerries, swords, stones, knives, spears and daggers.
Chief Superintendent Chikono stressed that the possession or public display of these weapons is likely to cause public disorder or breach of peace.
“Members of the public are warned to desist from carrying or displaying any weapons whatsoever likely to occasion public disorder or breach of peace during the specified period.
“Violators of this ban will face serious consequences under Section 4(4) of the Maintenance of Peace and Order Act. Offenders could be subjected to a fine not exceeding Level Five, imprisonment for up to six months, or both.
“Local residents are urged to comply with the new regulations and cooperate with law enforcement authorities to ensure the safety and tranquility of the Gokwe District. Police will be vigilant in enforcing this prohibition and maintaining public order.” Chikono added
Meanwhile residents of Gokwe community have welcomed the move, hoping it will reduce violent incidents and enhance overall security.
