Gokomere students march against corruption

FARAI CHITOTOMBE

MASVINGO-Roman Catholic Church run Gokomere Mission High form 4 learners this morning marched from the school towards Masvingo City against alleged corruption and abuse of pupils by authorities.

The students, numbering over 50 were stopped by armed police at the 10km peg along Harare Highway as they wanted to go and hand over a petition to the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education offices in town.

The students could be heard shouting, “they beat us while naked, they abuse our money, they are very corrupt,” in reference to the school authorities.

When The Midweek Watch left the scene the learners were ordered to sit down by the side of the highway and asked to narrate their grievances to the Police manning the road block.

It is alleged that the march was triggered by two form 4 students who were expelled for fighting at the school.

Efforts to get a comment from the Provincial Education Director, Shylatte Mhike were fruitless as her number was not available until the time of posting the story.

Masvingo Diocese education secretary Father Samson Mutsvanga referred all questions to Gokomere Mission Priest in charge Father James Magadzire who was not picking up his mobile phone.

In 2012 Mukaro Girls High learners in Gutu marched from the school to Mupandawana Growth Point at 4am over poor food.

The headmaster at Mukaro then was Aquanos Mazhunga who is the current head at Gokomere Mission.
