GWERU-The resuscitation of Go Beer Brewery is now 98% complete, with the majority of critical infrastructure successfully installed.
The investor is currently working on final touch-ups ahead of the official opening.
Originally expected to commence operations in November, the brewery’s launch has been delayed as the Gweru City Council and its partner, Crest Street Industries, await the necessary brewing license.
The large brewery is anticipated to enhance local authority revenue, thereby improving service delivery and stimulating the local economy.
In addition, the council has planted over 45 hectares of maize at its Go Beer farm to diversify revenue sources beyond rates billing.
Addressing an ordinary full council meeting on Tuesday, Economic Business Development Manager Rodwell Musiiwa said the production is expected to start at the Go Beer brewery plant in a month’s time.
He confirmed that the plant has been inspected and approved by the National Social Security Authority (NSSA).
“As of now, the Go Beer brewery is 98% complete, and we are expecting to begin operations before Christmas.
The only remaining step is securing the brewing license, which we are actively pursuing.
However, the brewery itself has been inspected and approved by NSSA,” Musiiwa said.
Regarding the Go Beer farm, Musiiwa noted that they now have sufficient water supply from Pakamisa pumping station, although they are facing challenges due to power disruptions.
Council spokesperson Vimbai Chingwaramusee added that “the joint venture arrangement will lead to the recruitment of more than 50 people by Go Beer Brewery.”
Go Beer is projected to produce 30 000 liters of beer per month, which is expected to service districts throughout the Midlands Province.
The brewery was closed in 2014 after accumulating a debt of US$2.6 million and failing to meet obligations to the Local Authorities Pension Fund.
Since 2009, the local authority has supported Go Beer with US$2,208,914 for payments to former employees and creditors.
