KWEKWE- Enrollment at Globe and Phoenix Primary School in Kwekwe has been affected after the school was shut down as a result of illegal mining operations which caused its structural collapse.
Speaking during a tour of the new school on Tuesday last week, School Development Committee (SDC) chairperson Innocent Katsotso said pupils were currently learning from tents and this has adversely affected their enrolment.
“Our leaners have been exposed to harsh weather conditions because they were using tents. This development adversely affected our enrolment which dwindled from 1300 to a mere 785.
“We expect to finish constructing the new facility by September this year. We want to thank the Latter Day Saints Church and Kwekwe City Council for mobilising resources towards the construction of the school,” he said.
He said the school is seeking assistance to pull resources towards the construction of an Early Childhood Development (ECD) classroom block.
“We want to thank our donors, the Latter Day Saints Church for the funding however, we are still in need of assistance to construct Early Childhood Development (ECD) classroom blocks,” he said.
The new project currently has an Administration, ablution, and 7 by 2 classroom blocks trusses installed, and 5 by 2 classroom blocks at roofing level.
The Globe and Phoenix Primary School has been closed following a devastating collapse of classroom blocks caused by illegal gold mining activities beneath the school premises.
The decision to close the school was made after a thorough assessment revealed significant structural damage, rendering the buildings unsafe for students and staff.
