Mutare – The community of Pegasus in Dangamvura is mourning the heartbreaking loss of a young life following a tragic drowning incident on the night of May 13, 2026.
Seven year old Grace Selma Chirukamari lost her life after falling into a large plastic container filled with water at her family home. The incident occurred around 9 PM while Grace was reportedly playing outside with a one-year-old infant.
Their mother, 32 year old Tendayi Tachi, was inside the house at the time of the accident. Upon going outside later that evening, she made the devastating discovery that her daughter had drowned. In a desperate attempt to save her, Grace was rushed to a private hospital at Mukwena Business Centre, but tragically, she was pronounced dead upon arrival. The matter was subsequently reported to the Zimbabwe Republic Police in Dangamvura, and her body was moved to Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
Manicaland province acting police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka confirmed the sad news to The Midweek Watch.
This tragedy serves as a somber reminder of how quickly a moment of play can turn into a lifetime of sorrow.
Chinyoka issued a stern yet soulful appeal to parents and guardians. He urged those in charge of children to exercise extreme caution and maintain constant supervision, particularly in homes where water tanks, wells, or large containers are present. “We appeal to parents to always prioritize the safety of children and ensure they are supervised at all times to avoid such tragic incidents,” he stated, hoping to prevent another family from enduring such an unimaginable heartbreak.
