GWERU-Gweru City Council is set to launch a revenue collection blitz and close all businesses that have not paid operating licenses for the current year.
In a notice issued on Friday June 16, 2023 the local authority has warned all businesses that are not compliant with the City’s by laws will be heavily dealt with beginning June 19.
“City of Gweru is calling upon all residents and stakeholders to clear their bills.
“We are also calling upon all businesses to operate legally by paying their licences. Failure to do so will lead to business closure.
“City of Gweru will be carrying out a revenue collection blitz on Monday 19 June 2023.” read the notice as issued by Acting Gweru Town Clerk, Livingstone Churu
Last week, Gweru Residents and Ratepayers Association (GRRA) director, Conilia Selipiwe urged residents to pay their bills saying the move would enable council to offer proper services.
“As much as council has a mandate to provide us with the services we need, it is also our mandate to pay our bills so that we get the water and other services that we need.
“The challenge we now have as a City is that people are no longer paying because the services are not reaching them. Lets pay our bills to get the services we want” he added.
Gweru City is owed billions of dollars by residents and the business community in bills and over the past months, residents have been receiving bills amounting to more than ZW$100 000 per month.
The move has left the residents fuming over the billing system.
