MILLICENT HUNGWE
CHIVI-ZANU PF’s Chivi District leadership has recommended former MP Mathias Tongofa to fill the vacant Central Committee position for Chivi, previously held by Brigadier-General (Retired) Elasto Madzingira, who passed away on August 8 last year.

ZANU PF Masvingo Provincial Chairperson Robson Mavhenyengwa told The Midweek Watch that, “The nomination was made during a district meeting where Tongofa was recommended, with the name now set to be forwarded to the party’s full Central Committee in Harare for final approval.”
The endorsement follows internal consultations by the Chivi Central Committee, which deemed Tongofa a suitable candidate to step into the influential post.
“The final decision, however, will be made by the party’s highest decision-making body in the presence of President Emmerson Mnangagwa,” Mavhenyengwa added.
Speaking to the press, Tongofa remained cautious about the outcome.
“I cannot comment for now because anything can happen. We wait for the Full Central Committee to decide,” he said.
If approved, Tongofa will re-enter the upper echelons of ZANU PF politics, bringing with him experience from his tenure as Chivi North legislator from 2013 to 2023 and various party roles as well as deputy minister of youth over the years.
The Central Committee plays a key role in shaping party direction, especially ahead of major policy and electoral decisions.
A decision is expected in the coming days, as the party continues to realign its structures.
