HARARE – The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) reported a decrease in total road traffic accidents during the 2024-2025 festive season, but an increase in fatal accidents.

National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi.

According to ZRP national spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi, the total number of road traffic accidents decreased from 3,607 in 2023-2024 to 2,936 in 2024-2025.

However, the number of fatal accidents rose from 118 to 133 over the same period.

While the number of people killed decreased slightly from 162 to 155, the number of people injured increased from 821 to 938, Nyathi said in a press statement.

“The statistics show that the total number of road traffic accidents decreased, while the number of fatal road traffic accidents increased,” Nyathi said, adding that the number of people killed decreased, while the number of people injured increased.

Nyathi noted that the ZRP did not record any major fatal road traffic accidents during the period.

However, in one accident on December 31, 2024, three people were killed and ten others injured when an Isuzu KB 250 vehicle side-swiped a Toyota Probox vehicle with 13 passengers.

The police also expressed concern over incidents where pedestrians were killed at night while crossing roads, and motorists failed to stop after the accidents.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police urges motorists to exercise extreme caution and prioritize road safety, especially during the night,” Nyathi said. “Motorists should remain vigilant and attentive to pedestrians crossing the roads to prevent road traffic accidents.”

Nyathi emphasized that in the event of a road traffic accident, drivers should stop and render first aid to the victims, and promptly report the accident to the police.
