The Agricultural Extension Services (AGRITEX) in Chiredzi has urged farmers in the low veld to treat their surplus cereals to reduce post harvest losses and maintain grain quality.

Speaking to The Midweek Watch, Chiredzi AGRITEX officer Tongai Bodi said farmers should ensure proper grain handling and treatment procedures to avoid losses due to pests mold or improper storage.
“This is the time of the season when farmers in dry land areas are marketing cereals, pulses and other major cash crops. If moisture content in cereals is higher than the required average of 11%, farmers should dry their grain to prevent spoilage, mold formation, and losses,” said Bodi.
Bodi also emphasized the importance of using grain protectants purchased only from reputable agro dealers, warning against buying such chemicals from the streets. He urged farmers to carefully follow instructions when applying protectants, wear proper protective gear and clearly label treated grain to avoid over or under treatment and accidental poisoning.
Farmers are further encouraged to work closely with agricultural business advisory officers stationed in every ward to ensure proper handling of their produce.
Chiredzi AGRITEX continues to recommend that proper grain management and adherence to safety practices are key steps in safeguarding harvests, improving income and ensuring food security in the low veld region.
