Zvishavane- Farmers who attended an Agric 24 workshop held in collaboration with Prime Agro and Syngenta dubbed the cucurbit training workshop on July 26 at Tafa Farm in Zvishavane hailed the workshop as an eye opener as they learnt a number of new things..
The framers said the workshop was illuminating as they learnt how to correct the mistakes they were doing which were affecting their harvest.
The event featured Selina Hatidani Sakupwanya field promoter in the Midlands Province for Syngenta, Prosper Chinyakata marketing officer Agric 24 as well as host lawyer cum farmer Herbert Tafa .
The event was organized with the intention of providing education and information to farmers regarding cucurbit farming. The primary focus of the event revolved around cucumbers and watermelons, as these were the crops being cultivated at Tafa Farm.
The farmers had the opportunity to market their produces while companies’ representatives showcased what they offer. The audience gained insights into various resources, services, and support available to them in their farming endeavors.
Farmers were taught the correct spacing between plants, applying the right amount of fertilizer and manure, and understanding the optimal time for planting.
Liberty Moyo, said the workshop was an eye opener as he learnt new things and hope to implement them when he ventures into cucumber farming which is his major interest.
” These workshops should be held more frequently as they enlighten us a lot, l wanted to venture into cucumber but l was hesitant, but after this workshop l now have the confidence to start the project as now l have the requisite knowledge,” he said.
Sakupwanya emphasized the importance of planting watermelon at the right time.
“The workshop was a success as it meant to equip farmers with knowledge on cucurbit plants for example the date to plant watermelon is crucial; if planted late, they will be affected by the summer rains”, she said.
