Gweru- Environmental Management Agency ( EMA) has warned of the severe health risks posed by mercury exposure to miners and the environment hence the need to follow proper procedures.
Speaking at a recent workshop, (EMA) representative for Mberengwa District, Innocent Chisi, highlighted mercury’s capacity to accumulate in the body, leading to strokes and cognitive impairments.
“Miners should adopt safer technologies that do not endanger human health or the environment.
” I therefore emphasize the importance of responsibly closing open pits post-mining to prevent environmental harm.
“As EMA we urge miners to avoid indiscriminate tree felling and instead establish nurseries to replenish the trees they cut down. There is a necessity of containing and recycling water used in mining operations to protect wildlife.” he added.
Chisi further highlighted EMA’s efforts to enforce compliance with environmental regulations among miners.
“On the issues of addressing chemical safety we call upon miners to prevent the leakage of hazardous substances like mercury and cyanide to safeguard animals and the environment.
“There are requirements for miners to obtain licenses for chemical storage, ensuring EMA is informed of their presence.” Chisi said.
The use of mercury remains a serious challenge which needs all stakeholders to join forces in protecting both life and the environment.
