Dondone Dam disaster death toll now 6

CHIPINGE-The Dondone Dam disaster death toll now stands at six following the discovery of five more bodies along the flooded river while two more people are missing.

Police has confirmed that after extensive searches on March 10 five more bodies were retrieved and the disaster has left the Chipinge villagers in fear as it reminds them of the Cylclone Idai that killed over 300 people in the area.

Tapiwa Mtisi (13) of plot 50 Hilrand Farm, Chipinge doing grade 6 at Hilrand Primary School’s body was found in Dondone River after the dam burst on March 9.

Zembile Dube (4) of plot 45 Woodstop Farm, Chipinge an ECD ‘B’ pupil at Hilrand Primary and Agnes Mupazi (4) of Manyaya Village under Chief Mutema in Chpinge were also swept away by the swollen river.

Forgiveness Maposa (10) of plot 45 Woodstop Farm, Chipinge doing grade 3 at Hilrand Primary School also met her fate on the day and her body was retrieved by the police on March 10 from the flooded river.

Blessing Maone Chibhamu (11) of Loughingspring Farm in Chipinge doing grade 4 at Junctiongate Primary School in Chipinge was also swept away and his body was retrieved on March 10 and together with four others were taken to Chipinge District Hospital for postmortem.

Earlier on Agnes Muchadeyi (4) from Lot 3 Newcastle under Chief Mutema in Chipinge was swept away as she was doing laundry downstream in the middle of the river with Perseverance Sithole (26) who survived by clinging to a tree.

 Agnes’s body was found floating 3km from the place they were doing laundry by her father Tinashe Muchadeyi (28).

Grace Mlambo (8) and Julius Mhlanga (8) of plot 45 Woodstoke Farm in Chipinge are still missing and the search by the police is going on.  See earlier story for more details.
