A 34-year-old man from Musengi village in Chief Chilonga, Chiredzi died a painful death when he was attacked by a crocodile while fishing in Runde River.
According to Masvingo province police spokesperson, Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa, Charles Muzamani and his uncle, Ingwani Muzamani (64), went fishing at the confluence of Runde and Pfuti rivers on February 21 at around 1500hours.
While fishing, Charles decided to swim to the other end to cast their nets, but unfortunately, he was attacked by a crocodile and dragged underwater. His uncle, who witnessed the horrific incident, immediately sought help from nearby villagers and attempted to locate Charles’ body, but to no avail.
The police were notified, and a search party was dispatched to the scene on February 22. Charles’ body was found 500 meters downstream from where he was attacked, with both hands and the head missing. The body was taken to Chiredzi Hospital for postmortem.
Inspector Dhewa warned the public to exercise extreme caution when near water bodies especially those known to be infested with crocodiles.
“We urge people to be vigilant and take necessary precautions when fishing or swimming in rivers, especially during this time of the year when crocodiles are more active,” he said.
