CHIPINGE -Learnmore Jack Ngezi (28) from Chipinge died from injuries he sustained after he was stabbed on the neck with an okapi knife while trying to stop a fight.

Manicaland provincial police spokesperson Inspector Nobert Muzondo confirmed the incident that happened on Sunday at around 1am in the farming town of Chipinge.

Insp Muzondo told The Midweek Watch that Ngezi of Gumira Village under Chief Musikavanhu in Chipinge died at St Peters Mission Hospital following the attack by Hardlife Mapumisa (18) of the same village at a party at Mutanda Shop.

Mapumisa and the late Ngezi were amongst some revelers at a party at Mutanda Shop in the same village.

A misunderstanding arose between Mapumisa and one Punishment Pambei Gumira of the same village who confronted Mapumisa accusing him of being involved in a love affair with his daughter.

Ngezi intervened in a bid to restrain Mapumisa and Gumira from quarrelling. However, this did not go down well with Mapumisa who withdrew an okapi knife from his pocket and stabbed Ngezi once on the right side of the neck.

After committing the act, Mapumisa fled from the scene and disappeared into the darkness.

Gumira informed Ngezi ‘s brother Muchaneta Simango about the incident. Ngezi was ferried to St Peters Mission Hospital.

Ngezi later died on the same day at around 11am from a deep cut he sustained on the right side of the neck. His body is still at the hospital mortuary awaiting post mortem.

Police attended the scene but the accused had already fled from the scene.  The police received a tip off to the effect that Mapumisa was planning to skip the border to South Africa.  He was arrested at Kujokochera bus stop along Ngundu Tanganda road.

Muzondo said investigations are in progress and Mapumisa is currently detained at Chisumbanje Police Station.

“I can confirm that we received a case where an 18 year old man stabbed a fellow villager with and okapi knife. It’s a very sad story where a good Samaritan ended up losing his life as he tried to make things right between the warring parties. As police we are encouraging members of the public that violence does not pay as the long arm of the law will catch up with you. In this case, we managed to arrest him and investigations are underway,” he said.
