GWERU-Chapungu FC produced a disciplined and clinical display to dispatch Midlands State University FC 3–0 in a ZIFA Central Region Soccer League Gweru derby played at the Main Campus Stadium on Sunday.
The visitors controlled proceedings for long spells, blending organisation at the back with sharp transitions in attack to complete a comfortable away victory.
Striker Edward “Kariba” Watson was once again the difference maker, netting a second successive brace to take his tally to five goals in four matches.
He broke the deadlock in the 21st minute, finishing off a swift counter attack after being picked out by Brian “Smesh” Ndlovu with a well-weighted through ball.
Watson doubled Chapungu’s lead on 39 minutes, showing composure to control a pass from Divine Sibanda, shrug off his marker and slotting home from close range as the visitors went into the break 2–0 up.
Chapungu maintained their grip on the contest after the restart and sealed the result in the 73rd minute.
After Brighton “Szoboszlai” Magiliza was brought down, the loose ball fell to Sibanda, who weaved past a defender before calmly finishing to complete a well-worked move.
MSU FC competed strongly in patches and contributed to an entertaining derby, but Chapungu’s structure, discipline and finishing proved decisive on the day.
