KWEKWE-The Consumer Council of Zimbabwe (CCZ) has intensified efforts to combat the influx of counterfeit and substandard goods through the introduction of a digital verification platform that enables consumers to instantly verify product authenticity before purchase.

Speaking on the sidelines of the organisation’s strategic planning workshop in Kwekwe on Monday, CCZ chief executive officer Rosemary Mpofu said the platform dubbed Buy CCZ-Verified will harness artificial intelligence (AI), data visualisation, and multi-channel access through the web, WhatsApp, and USSD codes to help consumers identify fake products.
“This innovation is designed to protect consumers from fake and substandard products that have flooded the market,” Mpofu said. “Through Buy CCZ-Verified, consumers can scan a QR code or search a product name to get real-time confirmation of authenticity before buying.”
The new system, set for official launch before year-end, will also enable users to locate authorised sellers, report counterfeit goods, and receive alerts on expired or low-quality products.
Mpofu said the proliferation of counterfeit goods had become a national concern, citing reports received by the CCZ showing that fake products were now widespread across multiple sectors, including pharmaceuticals, food, beverages, clothing, solar equipment, and automotive parts.
“Counterfeits pose a serious threat to public health and safety. They undermine legitimate businesses, erode government revenue, and weaken consumer trust in local brands,” she said.
Mpofu attributed the surge in fake goods to porous borders and the growth of informal markets where counterfeit items are sold openly, calling for more coordinated enforcement among key stakeholders.
“To effectively fight this menace, we need collaboration among government agencies, regulators, businesses, and consumers. Stronger border controls, regular blitzes, and stiffer penalties, including custodial sentences, are critical to curbing the scourge,” she added.
She also underscored the role of the media in raising awareness and promoting responsible consumer behaviour.
“The media is a powerful ally in shaping consumer behaviour and exposing illicit trade. We urge you to continue educating the public on the dangers and economic costs of counterfeiting,” she said.
The Buy CCZ-Verified initiative is expected to boost consumer confidence, support legitimate enterprises, and help government recover millions lost through illicit trade.
CCZ will partner with Proma Events Africa during the forthcoming national counterfeit goods awareness campaign.
