MASVINGO-The Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe (TSCZ) has raised concern over curious bystanders crowding at accident scenes, saying the habit delays emergency responses thereby risking causing more deaths.
In an interview with The Midweek Watch, Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe (TSCZ) managing director Munesu Munodawafa said crowding at accident scenes blocks access for ambulances or fire crews and this results in delaying rescue of trapped victims.
“Crowding at accident scenes is not advisable. The trend blocks access for ambulances or fire crews and this also delays the rescue of trapped victims.
“This behaviour can cost lives and we warn people to desist from this disturbing trend,” he said.
He urged members of the public to stay back and allow professionals do their work.
This follows a tragic crash which happened at Hunyani River in Harare last week where 17 people were killed after a South Africa-registered truck collided with a commuter omnibus which was heading to St Mary’s in Chitungwiza.
He said rescue teams were blocked by crowding onlookers a development which resulted in inured victims losing lives during the golden hour.
