Bus disaster: 8 families get state assisted funeral

MASVINGO CITY-The Government has extended assistance to the eight families who lost their loved ones in the tragic bus accident that occurred on August 30 along the Masvingo-Mutare Road.

Speaking during the send-off ceremony at the Doves Funeral Parlor, Masvingo Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Ezra Chadzamira, said the government had provided coffins, food and transport to support the grieving families.

He noted that he was delivering the President Mnangagwa’s condolence and support, to ensure that the affected families were comforted.

One of the beneficiaries, Chengetai Mhuka from Mutare, expressed deep gratitude to the government for the funeral assistance.

 “We are so thankful for this support in our time of pain. It has lessened our burden and we feel the government is walking with us,” he said.

Another beneficiary Mrs Mazuru from Nyanga said the same level of support should be extended to other citizens who face similar tragedies.

 “What the President has done for us is commendable. We hope others who find themselves in such heartbreaking situations also get this kind of assistance,” she said.

Some of the relatives who came to collect the bodies of their loved ones.

Minister Chadzamira also took the opportunity to appeal to public transport drivers to always prioritise safety. He urged them to rest when tired and avoid risking passengers’ lives due to fatigue or negligence.

 “We are losing lives everyday. Drivers must respect the rules of the road, take a rest when need be and understand the responsibility you carry on each trip,” he said.
