Armed robber jumps off moving car movie style

MWENEZI-The small Growth Point community of Rutenga in Mwenezi was treated to a mini drama on Christmas day when an armed robber driving a stolen Honda Fit abandoned the steering and sped off in lightning speed into the bush leaving the crowd and police speechless.

The driver whose name was not provided who was in the company of Artwell Chakwira (26) of Chakwira Village under Chief Marozva in Bikita failed to alight from the Honda Fit to follow his athletic friend to escape from the police who were in hot pursuit due to shock.

The police had cornered the suspected armed robbers who had just pounced on two girls at Flora Shopping Centre, Bubi earlier on.

The flying armed robber dropped a loaded CZ Pistol from his pocket as he was sprinting away from the law enforcement agency.

Upon searching the Honda Fit the police found unfitted number plates and a passport belonging to Praise Tlou the owner of the car which was stolen from Beitbridge in December this year where the two are suspected to have committed a spree of robberies.

At Flora Shopping Centre the driver parked their Honda Fit and he disembarked and drew out a pistol and fired one shot into the air and went on demand money and cellphones form Mercy Manjara from Chief Maranda in Mwenezi and her friend who were at the bus stop with their luggage.

The driver was given R300 and two cellphones worth $1 300 and nothing was recovered.

Masvingo Province deputy police spokesperson Assistant inspector Masauso Patinyu said they are appealing to the public for any information that may lead to the arrest of the armed robber.

He also added that people should be always alert when they are at bus stops as thieves can pounce on them any time especially during the festive season when they know commuters may have some cash on them.
