Advocate peace in stories-Police urges journalists

Gweru- Journalists have been urged to advocate for peace in their writings as the country enters the election season.
The call was made by the ZRP Midlands Provincial community liaison and public relations officer, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko during the ‘World Press Freedom Day’ commemorations held at the Bata Club in Gweru on Saturday.
With Zimbabwe expected to go for harmonised elections later this year a number of organisations have been advocating for peace and safer environment for all stakeholders.
In his solidarity message, Inspector Mahoko added that, the media is a key component in society as well as in the operations of the law enforcement institution.
“This year’s ‘Word Press Day’ celebrations remind us of the cordial relations between the Police and the Press which must be jealously guarded.
“I am happy as the celebrations come at a time we just hosted a Media-Police engagement which saw our Police commander coming to interface with the media as a way to strengthen our relations and find amicable ways of working in harmony ahead of the elections.
“Let me add that slowly we are entering into the election mode as elections are coming. We know politicians will approach you as the media seeking marketing and publicity platforms but please exercise fair reporting by advocating for peace in your articles and broadcast by upholding ethical standards. We need to protect our community by disseminating fair, balanced and accurate information,” Mahoko added.
He also said the Press as helped in a number of ways to arrest suspects and give leads to crime scenes.
“Midlands busted crime with the help of the media by giving out notices of wanted persons. Many arrests and trials were done and thanks to you the media.” he added.
Community based organisation, Women Coalition of Zimbabwe (WCoZ) Gweru chapter chairperson….. said the media was instrumental in amplifying the voices and rights of the marginalised groups.
“As women we continue to work with the media, a number of issues have been raise thanks to you journalists, and we still have a long way to go together in terms of advocating for women’s rights.
“In as much as our locality is concerned, issues to do with service provision remain a challenge among community as women and remain the most affected people.
“Issues of abuse remain high in community, as we denounce all elements of abuse speak on our behalf, we want to be heard.” …said.
This year’s World Press Day celebrations were commemorated under the theme, ” Shaping a future of Rights: Freedom of expression as a driver for all other human rights.”
