A national hero or heroine does not need a length of history for people to be convinced that he or deserve that status.
Was there needy for citizens to be told that General Josiah Magama Tongogara, General Lookout Masuku, General Rex Nhongo Mujuru, Edgar Twoboy Tekere, Dumiso Black Russian Ndabengwa, Dr Joshua Father Zimbabwe Chibwechitedza Nkomo were heroes?

The citizens knew and didn’t want to be told that Morgan Tsvangirai, Jairos Jiri, George Shaya, Sally Mugabe, Auxilia Chimusoro and Mbuya Stella Chiweshe were national heroes and heroines. This doesn’t matter if Zanu PF declare the status or not. The citizens in their spirit and minds declare national heroes and heroines.
The citizens national heroes and heroines don’t need to be buried at the National Heroes Acre. All those who were declared national heroes or heroines without the spiritual approval of citizens are immediately forgotten after burial.
There are those which Zanu PF did not declare but are imprinted in the minds and spirits of citizens and will never be forgotten. Who doesn’t remember Morgan Tsvangirai, George Shaya etc? Even the majority of Zanu PF supporters still remember and praise Morgan Tsvangirai for the great work he did to the economy during the GNU.
If today Peter Ndlovu , Nelson Chamisa, Simba Makoni, Emmanuel Makandiwa, Alex Macheso, Thomas Mapfumo, Nehemiah Mutendi just to mention a few , were to pass on today will we have to labour ourselves debating if they are national heroes or heroines? The funerals themselves vindicate that they are true national heroes and heroines.
Zanu PF refused to declare Morgan Tsvangirai a hero but the funeral in its own declared his status. The history of Zimbabwe has Morgan Tsvangirai, Susan Tsvangirai, General Rex Nhongo Mujuru, Dr Joshua Father Zimbabwe Chibwechitedza Nkomo and Robert Mugabe’s funerals as having the largest crowds ever. The problem Zanu PF is making is personalizing national heroes and heroines.
It would have been best if an independent commission was constitutionally formed to do the heroes status.
Zanu PF must think beyond today .It must consider how will heroes status will be declared when they are out of power. Does Zanu PF think another ruling party will allow them to sitting down and declare heroes status? It is important for Zanu PF to amend the constitution whilst they in power for the Heroes Conferment Independent Commission. They have the powers to make sure the composition of the Commission caters for their interests today and in future.
Most ruling parties never dream of them being out of power. Botswana, Zambia, Malawi are typical examples of how ruling parties ended up as opposition. In South Africa and Mozambique the opposition nearly caused upsets. Zanu PF must be warned that power doesn’t last forever. Heroes and Heroines must reflect our national aspirations, day to day living/experiences, cultural and political diversity. National Heroes Conferment must not be a prerogative of a political party but an inclusive process
