MASVINGO – A domestic dispute turned fatal in Chivi after a 40-year-old man allegedly stabbed his brother-in-law to death while pursuing his wife.
Masvingo Provincial Police spokesperson Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa confirmed the incident, which occurred on July 20 in Ndonyerai Village under Headman Madyangove, Chivi ward 8.
“We urge members of the public not to keep dangerous weapons. Disputes should never be resolved through violence. Instead, people should seek the intervention of a third party to help resolve conflicts through dialogue, as murder cases attract lengthy prison sentences,” said Inspector Dhewa.
The deceased has been identified as Godfrey Romberai (43), while the suspect is Wilbert Rice (40), both of Ndonyerai Village. The deceased was the accused’s brother-in-law.
Dhewa told The Midweek Watch that the incident followed a misunderstanding between Rice and his wife, Sibongile Romberai (43), at around 5pm.
During the altercation, Sibongile fled from the family home and headed to her brother’s nearby homestead to seek help. Along the way, she met her brother, Godfrey, who had already come out to investigate the disturbance after hearing the commotion.
The siblings returned to the couple’s homestead together, where the accused allegedly threatened to kill Godfrey if he interfered in his marital affairs before becoming violent.
Godfrey and his sister then decided to leave and walked back towards his home. However, after walking for about 500 metres, the accused allegedly followed them armed with a knife.
Police said the accused allegedly attempted to stab his wife but missed and instead stabbed Godfrey once on the neck.
Godfrey sustained a deep cut, bled profusely and died at the scene.
The incident was reported to the police, who attended the scene and have since launched investigations. The accused was subsequently arrested.
Meanwhile, Chivi North MP, Godfrey Huruva Mukungunugwa said he was shocked to learn of the murder case in his constituency and will try to assist the bereaved family where possible.
“I was shocked and saddened to hear of the murder case, I want to urge people to respect the sanctity of life, disputes should be solved amicably, and people should not put the law into their own hands. If one is wronged seek the intervention of police, elders and local pastors. However, we will assist the bereaved family in whatever small way we can,” said MP Mukungunugwa.
