Mutare – A somber atmosphere has settled over Chisumbanje Village following the tragic death of 36 year old Million Sundirai, who took his own life on the evening of May 13th.
The incident occurred under the jurisdiction of Chief Garawa after a domestic dispute between Sundirai and his wife, Rumbidzai Chikepe, turned violent. During the confrontation, Sundirai demanded that his wife leave their matrimonial home. After she packed her belongings and departed for her parents’ residence, Sundirai remained at the house alone.
The grim discovery was made shortly after by Sundirai’s niece. While passing through the yard around 18:00 hrs, the young girl heard distressing choking sounds emanating from the bedroom. Upon investigating the noise, she found her uncle hanging from a roof truss. The niece immediately alerted Sundirai’s wife, who then filed a formal report with the Chisumbanje Police. Authorities noted no visible external injuries on the body, and the remains have since been transported to the St. Peter’s Mission Hospital mortuary pending a post-mortem examination.
In the wake of this loss, Manicaland province acting police spokesperson, Assistant Wiseman Chinyoka issued a poignant plea to the community, urging couples experiencing domestic friction to seek professional mediation or counseling rather than resorting to such final, devastating measures. He emphasized that it is heartbreaking when a life is cut short due to a temporary crisis, noting that “speaking out is not a sign of weakness; it is an act of courage.” The tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the devastating impact of silence and the void suicide leaves behind for families and loved ones.
This incident highlights the importance of breaking the harmful stigma that men must suffer in silence to appear “strong.” True strength lies in acknowledging when a situation is overwhelming and reaching out to friends, elders, or professionals. Counseling services and community leaders provide safe spaces to de-escalate violence and find constructive paths forward.
