3 NRZ crew members perish in Mutare-Machipanda train mishap

MUTARE – Three National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) crew members were trapped to death in train mishap that happened between Mutare and Machipanda on Monday night.

I a press statement which is in The Midweek Watch’s possession, NRZ said the fatal accident took place after the train failed to negotiate a sharp curve and fell into a gorge.

“Preliminary investigations suggest that the locomotive which was pulling 14 wagons laden with nine export chrome concentrates and five granite blocks suffered a brake failure leading to a runaway which culminated in the train failing to negotiate a sharp curve thereby falling into the gorge

“Sadly, the three NRZ crews were trapped and could not make it to safety,” reads the statement.

They added that full details of the exact cause of the accident will be disclosed after the investigations.
