ZVISHAVANE– The second edition of the Agric 24 sponsored Great Dyke Athletics Club marathon is set for this weekend in the mining town of Zvishavane, coach Maliakini Makunganya told The Midweek Watch.
Makunganya said the race will feature clubs from Shurugwi, Gweru, Gwanda, ZRP Buchwa, Masvingo and Zvishavane.
He also said the race will also feature school children aged between 15 and 20 years old while the Walkathon will be composed of members from the surrounding communities.
This is the second marathon event that the two entities have organized together since they came together in 2021.
Munyaradzi Zizhou from Masvingo won the inaugural 10km race last time out pocketing US$100 with Zvishavane’s Lordbismar Mathe claiming second position.
Nkulumo Dube won the 30km mountain bike race ahead of Maxwell Masuku.
Great Dyke Athletics Club was founded in 2015 by former athlete-Stephen Phiri, Maliakini Makunganya, Kudakwashe Gwatirisa and Miriam Magwizi. The club has 30 athletes from nine years of age.
Agric 24 is an agrobusiness with a focus on input supply and extension advisory support services, which was founded in 2020 by marketing expert Prosper Chinyakata and his partners.
Makunganya said athletes are ready for the marathon and will not take anything for granted.
‘The race is on this weekend and a lot of athletes are geared up for the race with the level of competition expected to be higher than the last time,” he said.
